Wild Oceans

Wild Oceans have been quietly building serious momentum over the past year, selling out three headline shows and earning a headline slot at the Exeter Phoenix Festival. If "I Don't Need You" is anything to go by, that upward trajectory looks set to continue.

The band's latest single is an infectious slice of indie rock that perfectly balances heartbreak with hope. While its lyrics tackle the emotional fallout of finally walking away from a toxic relationship, the music takes a surprisingly uplifting route, wrapping its defiant message in shimmering guitars, driving rhythms and a chorus that feels tailor-made for festival crowds.

From the opening bars, "I Don't Need You" bursts with confidence. Fuzzy guitar lines collide with crisp production, while the rhythm section keeps everything moving with an irresistible sense of urgency. It's the kind of track that immediately demands a second listen—not because it's complicated, but because it's so effortlessly catchy.

What makes the song particularly effective is its contrast. Rather than dwelling in bitterness, Wild Oceans transform frustration into empowerment. The "screw you" sentiment at the heart of the lyrics never feels angry for the sake of it; instead, it becomes a declaration of independence, delivered with infectious optimism. It's breakup music that makes you want to roll the windows down, turn the volume up and sing every word back at the band.

Vocally, the performance carries genuine conviction, striking a balance between vulnerability and swagger. The melodies soar without becoming overblown, while the layered harmonies add extra weight to an already memorable chorus. By the time the final refrain arrives, it's impossible not to imagine hundreds of fans shouting it back from the front row.

There's also a noticeable step forward in the band's songwriting. While Wild Oceans have always had a knack for crafting hook-filled indie rock, "I Don't Need You" leans further into polished pop sensibilities without sacrificing the band's guitar-driven identity. Think the emotional honesty of Catfish and the Bottlemen, the anthemic energy of The Wombats and the summer-ready appeal of Circa Waves, all filtered through Wild Oceans' own unmistakable style.

As the first taste of their forthcoming second EP, the single sets expectations high. It's confident, relatable and packed with enough hooks to soundtrack the summer, while hinting that the band are continuing to evolve both musically and lyrically.

With sold-out hometown shows already under their belt and increasingly bigger festival appearances on the horizon, Wild Oceans are proving they're far more than another promising indie band. "I Don't Need You" feels like the sound of a group finding their stride—and inviting everyone along for the ride.

A huge, feel-good indie anthem that turns heartbreak into empowerment. Wild Oceans have delivered their strongest single yet, and it's easy to imagine this becoming a live favourite for months to come.
