Devotchka is For Lovers Fans waltzed into Water Street Music Hall in pairs to watch Devotchka live on Friday, June 20. Skipping the The Rochester International Jazz fest for a date night of heartbreak, desire and sultry confessions. Couples spent the night holding hands and catching gazes as they listened to opening act White Woods. The crowd patiently waited with anticipation for a romantic evening of indie rock blended with old world music. A sound that could transcend time and whisk you away to dark cabaret. But a 100 lovers could not be wrong. The historical wood floor vibrated as the crowd stomped and danced to Devotchka’s music. Men dipped their women, held them close and sang along to the music as if they were the only people in the room. Captivated by the five piece band that blends everyday instruments and incorporates the bizarre by adding the theremin, accordion, bouzouki and sousaphone to their music. The theatrical band has accumulated a cult following since they first started in Denver, Colorado in 1997. Gaining fans as they accompanied the Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Tease. Whose fantasy and spectacle matched Devotchka’s, making them a perfect on stage duo. However, the band gained wider attention for producing the score for popular film Little Miss Sunshine.
