Australian country-rock artist James Keith is back with another huge, emotionally charged anthem, and if “Cruel Game” is any indication of what’s coming on I Call It Magic When I’m With You, then October cannot arrive fast enough.

Set for release on May 29, “Cruel Game” sees Keith pushing his sound into bigger, bolder territory without losing the heartfelt honesty that has quickly made him one of the most exciting rising names in Australian country music. Driven by roaring electric guitars, pounding percussion and arena-sized hooks, the single lands somewhere between modern Nashville energy and classic heartland rock grit — a sound built for open highways, festival stages and late-night singalongs.

But underneath the muscle of the production lies the song’s real strength: vulnerability. Inspired by doubts cast over his long-distance relationship, Keith turns “Cruel Game” into a defiant statement about choosing love despite fear, distance and outside judgement. Instead of retreating into heartbreak clichés, he leans fully into devotion, transforming uncertainty into something powerful and resilient. It’s personal songwriting delivered with enough firepower to feel universal.

Vocally, Keith sounds completely locked in. There’s warmth and conviction in every line, especially as the track builds toward its soaring bridge and blistering guitar solo — a moment that elevates the song from strong country-rock single to full-blown anthem territory. The balance between tenderness and rugged intensity is what makes “Cruel Game” hit so hard.

The release also signals the arrival of Keith’s forthcoming album I Call It Magic When I’m With You, due October 2, a 14-track collection set to explore love, distance, optimism and emotional endurance. Judging by the themes already emerging, this looks set to be a record rooted in authenticity rather than trends — the kind of album that values storytelling just as much as hooks. And that authenticity has become Keith’s trademark.

Ever since his debut album Life Is Good Today topped the ARIA Country Albums Chart in 2024, James Keith has steadily carved out his own lane in Australian country-rock. Drawing inspiration from artists like Luke Combs and Zac Brown Band while injecting his own blue-collar energy and autobiographical storytelling, Keith’s music feels grounded, genuine and refreshingly unpolished in all the right ways.

You can hear those roots throughout “Cruel Game.” From its raw guitar tones to its emotional core, the song feels lived-in rather than manufactured — the sound of an artist writing from experience rather than image.

With a Top 10 placing in the prestigious Toyota Star Maker competition already under his belt and momentum continuing to build internationally, James Keith is beginning to look less like a promising newcomer and more like one of Australian country music’s next major breakout artists. And if I Call It Magic When I’m With You delivers on the promise of “Cruel Game,” this next chapter could be his biggest yet.
