Superchunk

On Sunday 21 June, one of the most important and enduring names in American indie rock arrives at Loco Club in Valencia for what promises to be one of the most essential gigs of the summer. Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1989, Superchunk have spent more than three decades proving that loud guitars, unforgettable melodies and a fiercely independent spirit never go out of style.

For many fans, Superchunk aren't simply another indie band. They're one of the architects of the entire movement. Long before streaming playlists and algorithm-driven recommendations, Superchunk were helping define what independent music could be. Their blend of punk energy, power-pop hooks and emotionally charged songwriting became a blueprint for countless bands that followed. Alongside their celebrated catalogue, the band also co-founded the legendary Merge Records label, which would later help launch artists such as Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel and Caribou to international audiences.

Yet despite their considerable legacy, Superchunk have never become a nostalgia act. The band's recent material continues to carry the same urgency, intelligence and infectious energy that made them cult heroes in the first place. Their latest recordings demonstrate a group still pushing forward, still writing memorable songs and still delivering performances that remind audiences why live music matters.

And that's where Loco Club enters the story. There are larger venues in Valencia. There are flashier venues too. But few spaces can match the atmosphere of Loco Club when a band of this calibre takes the stage. Celebrating 25 years as one of Valencia's most respected live music venues, the club has built its reputation on bringing world-class artists into an intimate environment where every guitar chord, every drum fill and every audience reaction feels immediate and personal. The venue hosts hundreds of concerts annually and remains a cornerstone of the city's thriving live music scene.

That's exactly how Superchunk should be experienced. Not through a phone screen. Not via a festival video clip. But standing shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow music obsessives in a packed room as Mac McCaughan and company launch into a set packed with fan favourites and career-spanning gems.

Anyone who has witnessed a Superchunk show will tell you the same thing: the records are fantastic, but the live experience is something else entirely. The band's trademark energy remains astonishingly intact, with performances that balance punk-rock intensity with razor-sharp musicianship and some of the most uplifting choruses in alternative music.

As Valencia's summer concert calendar begins to heat up, this is exactly the kind of show that reminds us why small venues remain the lifeblood of music culture. No giant screens. No fireworks. No distractions.

Just one of indie rock's greatest bands doing what they've done better than almost anyone else for more than thirty-five years.

For longtime fans, it's a chance to reconnect with a band that helped soundtrack an entire generation.

For younger audiences, it's an opportunity to discover where much of today's indie rock DNA originated.

Either way, when Superchunk walk onto the stage at Loco Club on June 21, Valencia will be hosting genuine indie-rock royalty. And if history has taught us anything, they're unlikely to disappoint.
