Hot Freaks
The Minneapolis indie-pop collective are back with Soft Body, an 11-track album that feels like a band rediscovering the joy of simply making music together. And judging by the results, they're onto something rather good.

Following the unexpected viral success of their 2013 single Puppy Princess, which found a massive second life on TikTok years later, Hot Freaks could easily have chased the formula. Instead, their third album takes a more organic route, drawing on old ideas, previously unreleased material and fresh compositions shaped across Minneapolis, Los Angeles and South Dakota.
The result is a record that wears its heart on its sleeve without sacrificing its sense of fun. Bright, nimble indie-pop melodies collide with lyrics steeped in romantic uncertainty, jealousy and the complicated business of trying to connect with another human being. It's the musical equivalent of smiling through the emotional chaos — and the contrast works a treat.
There's a looseness to the record that feels deliberate in the best possible way. Frontman Leo Vondracek, bassist Sarah Alfano, drummer Cody Brown and keyboardist Celeste Heule have allowed the songs to develop at their own pace, capturing the chemistry of friends making music rather than a band chasing a perfectly polished product.

The title track, Soft Body Girl, sets the tone with playful sensuality, handclaps and the nervous excitement of sharing a bed with someone you're desperate to impress. Its accompanying video takes the action to a suitably eccentric desert setting, complete with a broken-down car, sweaty mechanics and a mysterious leading lady. Subtlety clearly wasn't the brief.
Then there's Getting Over You, the album's already-established calling card. With more than 11 million streams, the track has connected with listeners well beyond the band's Minneapolis roots, and its inclusion makes perfect sense in a collection preoccupied with the emotional aftermath of relationships.
Across the album, Hot Freaks balance vulnerability with infectious energy, finding the sweet spot between heartfelt songwriting and the sort of hooks that refuse to leave your head. There's no need for grand musical gestures when a sharp melody and an honest lyric can do the heavy lifting.
What makes Soft Body particularly appealing is its sense of renewal. This isn't a band simply cashing in on an internet-fuelled moment; it's a group discovering that the story has plenty of chapters left. The songs feel lived-in, the performances unforced and the whole thing carries the warmth of musicians who genuinely enjoy being in the same room together.
Hot Freaks have turned an unexpected second act into a convincing next chapter. Soft Body is bright, bittersweet, gloriously catchy indie-pop with enough emotional grit beneath the sunshine to keep things interesting. Put it on, turn it up and prepare to find yourself singing along before you've quite worked out why.
